Travel Information (Germany) E-mail

The largest international airports near Saarbrücken are Frankfurt and Luxemburg:

Travelling from Frankfurt Airport to Saarbrücken:

The trip from Frankfurt to Saarbrücken may be done by train and it takes approximately 2,5 hours. For more information on tickets and train timetables please refer to http://www.bahn.de.

Travelling from Luxemburg to Saarbrücken:

From the airport you will be required to take a bus to Merzig, and from Merzig there is a train directly to Saarbrücken. For more information on tickets and train timetables please refer to http://www.bahn.de.

Upon arrival at Saarbrücken Train Station (Saarbrücken Hbf) you can go directly to the university by taking bus numbers 102, 111 or 124. (Please note that these busses only run during the semester). Another option is to take the tram (Saarbahn) to Johanneskirche (2nd stop). Across the road is the „Rathaus“ where you will be able to use buses 101, 102, 109 or 111 to go directly to the university (the ride takes approximately 15 minutes). For more information on bus timetables please refer to
http://www.saarbahn.de/fahrplan/.

If you are alone or in a group with a fair amount of luggage, there are taxis directly outside the train station that can assist you. If you pay more than 20 € you know the driver is taking you the long way round.

You may ask how punctual the transport is in Germany. It is often very unusual for a bus to be more than 1 minute late. Therefore, if the timetable says a bus is due to arrive at 11am, then it is suggested that you be there at least 5 minutes earlier.

Once you reach the campus, you should go to the „Akademisches Auslandsamt“ (building A4.4 Campus Center). Here you will receive more information that will assist you in the first few weeks plus if you have been assigned a room you will receive your keys. A guided tour will also be scheduled to show you around the campus.

For those who have not organised accommodation, there is a youth hostel within walking distance to the university. From the train station take bus 102 or 124 to “Prinzenweiher”.

Further information about the location of the University Campus can be found here.
