The department of Applied Physics, Mechanical, and Materials engineering is one of the 13 departments of Luleå University of Technology (LTU).

The research activities range from basic science to applied projects. The link to industry is very strong and the students enrolled in programs taught by the department have all worked in projects in collaboration with industries during their studies.

LTU has 5 campuses with a total of 12500 students. On the main campus a “House of technology” is open to the public. The “House of technology” was awarded the 2003 knowledge transfer prize for its commitment to educate and support teachers in their profession.

The materials science research carried out in the department covers five main research areas:

  • Micromechanics of materials
  • Surface engineering and thin film technology
  • Synthesis of new materials
  • Materials behaviour at extreme pressures
  • Computational materials science and engineering

Following Research Groups participate in the Master and provide topics for the Master Thesis:

Division of Manufacturing Systems Engineering

Engineering Materials

  • Microstructure modification of steels and other metallic materials
  • Microstructure – property interrelationship of metallic and ceramic engineering materials
  • Development and processing of high performance ceramic materials
  • Material selection for engineering applications

Open positions for PhD and Master Thesis: PhD position – optimization of induction heating process

Division of Polymer Engineering

  • Mechanical performance of polymer based composites. Experimental and theoretical studies of a) high performance fiber reinforced composites for aerospace, wind generator and navy applications; b)environmentally friendly natural fiber ( flax, hemp, etc) reinforced natural resin (lignin, starch etc) composites; c) multifunctional nano-structured composites using carbon nanotubes, clay or nanocellulose reinforcements.
  •  The main focus is on the nonlinear time and stress dependent composites behavior related to evolution of microdamage, viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity. Effects of moisture and temperature on performance. Development and identification of multiscale material models to use in design of structures
  • Experimental investigation of phenomena and mechanisms governing the mechanical behavior on several length scales using non-standard tests and in situ optical microscopy observations and SEM
  • Work on multifunctional composites with tailored electrical (energy storing) properties and high structural performance (structural batteries for cars)

Wood and Bionanocomposites

  • Wood plastic composites
  • Nanostructured biomaterials: isolation technologies of nanofibers and crystallites from different sources and their characterization
  • Processing technologies for composite materials: compounding, reactive extrusion, solvent casting, elctrospinnig etc

Open positions for PhD and Master Thesis: Processing and characterization of electrospunnen nanofibers reinforced with nanocrystallites (Master Thesis).

Division of Chemical engineering

  • Surface Chemistry: activities are focused on both fundamental and applied research on the surface-aqueous and surface-surface interactions in various environments using modern surface sensitive methodologies (IR, NMR, XRD, SEM, etc.). Of particular interest are problems with a bearing on mining-, tribological- and environmental applications.

  • Bioactive molecules: study of complex proteins, peptides and simple organic molecules. By studying the natural bioactive molecules or their synthetic analogues, valuable information about their therapeutic value as well as understanding of state of diseases can be gained.

  • Biorefinary: the research is focused on the development of cost effective, integrated processes for the use of biobased materials in the production of chemicals and fuels. Much of the research is focused on the improvement of thermochemical and biochemical processes with an emphasis on the forest products industry.

  • Zeolite: Zeolites are microporous crystalline materials with a very small and well defined pore size (0.3-1.3 nm). The focus of the zeolite group is development of new applications for the material zeolite e.g. membranes, structured catalysts, structured adsorbents and sensors.
